Everything you should know About PTO (Power Take-Off)

You might have noticed people talking about or buying a Power Take-Off, but do you ever wonder why? Why is there a need to have a PTO in tractors? Why it is required to use a PTO drive shaft in tractors? To answer these questions, we have done all the research for you.
Read following to know everything about a Power take-off.

What exactly is PTO?

The power take-off is a transformer, which takes an engine’s mechanical power and transmits it to another piece of equipment. The tools to which a PTO transfers power are those who do not have an engine, motor, or any other source of energy. For say, one is transferring power from a tractor to the jackhammer. PTOs are commonly recommended and used with the farming equipment, commercial vehicles, and trucks. But, you can use it anyway!

What are its Types?

In the past years, Power take-offs worked on a belt drive that had bleed air and drive-shaft like pneumatics. Today’s modern scenario is a bit different. There are three basic PTO or PTO drive-shaft out there which are listed as:
·         Tractor style: This PTO will engage with the tractor only when the transmission is applied to the clutch. The major motive of the entire mechanism is that the PTO doesn’t run even if the clutch is depressed.
·         Truck Transmission Style: It is used with the hydraulic pumps present at the front of a small truck. However, large trucks might have a PTO for an assortment of reasons, but the hydraulic pump is the common one.
·         Engine crankshaft-driven style: It is also mounted at the front of the truck and for say, can be used as a mixer. The small shafts are of U-shaped designed to join with the yoke coupler to turn the pump.
You can use any of these PTOs as per the desire and which is required for your vehicle.
